Four years ago there was a air of anticipation with the announcement of the arrival of the Democratic National Convention to Denver, Colorado. Today a mixed bag of feelings are churning through out the city and state in general. Denverites were promised commercial opportunity even though most of those are going to outside international corporate business, witnessed a terrorist attack training session, no local contemporary cultural showcases only the local western fare, mass transit shutting down the week of the convention among other things. A mixed bag to say the least. It seems to me that economically if you have the money you can buy your way into the event for your own exposure and lobby the Democrats for your own political needs. It's clear that the Democrats have come to prove a point and to take advantage of the shifting political landscape of the west and Denver is ground zero.

Not to mention that the cultural wing of the Mayor's Office, charged with "promoting the arts and culture of Denver", have instead decided to promote the arts & culture of everywhere else. No local artists need apply.

It's hard to get respect as an artist here. It's even harder when your own city won't give it. What's the message when people come to town and only see imported culture?

Denver's self-esteem problem continues. Nothing like acting like a cowtown to prove that you are one.
